What is a mole ( In chemistry )

Hello my readers!!!!

Welcome to my new blog!!

And by reading the title, you should have got the topic, that is ‘What is a mole?’…….

Well here I am not talking about the animal mole but the term that is used in chemistry so let’s start !!😀😀

So what is a mole?

A mole is a chemist's counting unit.. For eg, you go to a grocery store and ask the shopkeeper to give you 1 kg of spinach, so what is the 1 kg here ? It is a unit to measure the amount of a particular substance or object and in this case it is spinach.

So likewise a mole is like a unit for a chemist to carry out chemical reactions etc.

In more scientific words, Mole refers to the quantity of a substance in terms of the number of it's molecules and atoms, rather than their masses.

One mole of any element or compound is that quantity in number having mass equal to it's atomic or molecular mass in grams. It means that if you take one mole of carbon , it means that 12 g of carbon and 1 mole of oxygen = 16 g of oxygen. Why the amount is different? you must be thinking, The mass in grams is related to their Atomic mass. The higher the atomic mass the higher will be the mole . Second, if we refer mole in terms of mass it is known as molar mass, for eg:- 1 mole of carbon = 12g , so this 12 g is known as molar mass.

Means that a mole can contains different amount of mass for different substances, let's take an example of iron and cotton, you can find 1 kg of iron in the form of a huge block or you can just reshape it in a very small volume whereas for containing 1 kg of cotton you have to take a medium sized sack to contain it. Now see that the mass in both cases is same but the volume is different. This same is applies to mole concept. the term "mole" is same but the mass can be different. means that 1 mole of salt has different mass in comparison to chlorine.

1Kg of iron can be melted into a small volume

1kg of cotton needs more space to store as compared to iron

The mass of a mole of a substance depends on the atomic mass of a substance.

But there is a property of a mole the mass can be different of different substances but the number of particles (atoms , molecules) is same. It means that maybe the mass can be different but the number of atoms or molecules will be the same in all the substances , the number of particles in 1 mole of iron, copper , helium , hydrogen etc. will be the same.

And the number of particles in 1 mole is 6.022 x 1023

This number is also known as Avogadro's number or Avogadro's constant in the honor of the scientist who calculated it.

                                                        Summary

  • A mole is the quantity of a substance that has equal number of particles.
  • The mass of moles of different substances can be different due to their atomic masses.
  • Mass of 1 mole of a substance is called it's molar mass.
  • The particles in 1 mole of any substance is 6.022 x 1023
So that's for today, thanx for reading my blog , and yes , should I also write a blog on atomic mass? please reply in the comment. you can follow me on Instagram

Good bye , take care and keep reading my blogs!!!
